Can a coating thickness gauge measure the thickness of ceramic coatings?

2021-05-11

Ceramic coating refers to the use of special spray ceramic coating equipment to make a dense ceramic coating on the surface of a metal table or other substrates. However, its wear resistance, high temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance are among the best in the coating. Such coatings can be seen in daily life or in industrial production. The thickness of common ceramic coatings is generally between 0.1-0.5mm. Can this thickness be measured with a coating thickness gauge?

The answer is that the ceramic coating thickness can be measured with a large range of coating thickness gauges.0-5mm or 0-10mm measure range thickness gauge

At present, there is a difference in the expansion coefficient between the ceramic coating and the metal substrate in the physical structure. Therefore, when spraying the ceramic coating, an ultra-thin metal layer is usually sprayed on the metal substrate in advance to form a dual-structure coating.

Generally, the coating is on the metal substrate. The role of the coating in the coating structure is to slow down the large residual stress caused by the difference in linear expansion coefficient between the ceramic coating and the metal substrate, and improve the bonding strength of the coating and the substrate. Therefore, this thin metal layer is called the bonding layer. At present, the structure of ceramic coating is mostly such a double-layer coating structure.

Because the measuring principle of the coating thickness measuring instrument is the magnetic effect or the eddy current effect, the distance between the iron, aluminum, and alloy substrate and the probe is sensed through the effect, and the high-speed chip of the instrument is used to calculate, and finally a precise thickness value is obtained.

It should be noted that if the ceramic coating is not covered on the metal substrate, the coating thickness gauge cannot measure its thickness.

However, although ceramic coating is easy to use, it is not applicable everywhere. Because its preparation and coating process is relatively complicated, it is not realistic to achieve "full-scale armament". Generally, it will only target the local components with more serious erosion and wear, such as the bends and reducers of oil and gas gathering pipelines. For joints, valves with large openings, etc., ceramic coatings can be prepared in the areas where erosion and wear are concentrated, and it is expected that better wear resistance will be achieved.

Therefore, if you want to construct a coating thickness gauge for ceramic coating thickness measurement, it is recommended to choose a split coating thickness gauge, which is more flexible and applicable to a wider environment, or contact us to provide you with free industry measurement solutions.
